Chapter Six

Suz sat in the chair and looked around at the room full of people. It was good to be out of the Relationship Room, although the reason they’d been released still shocked and scared her. The systems had been infected. The program must have done something very bad to have prompted their release.

People took their seats at the large table in the center of the rectangular gray room. A representative from every position sat around the black-topped table. Someone had to mind the ship and continue the search.

Her eyes swept back to Robert. He sat at one end of the table wearing a white shirt, which hugged his muscular chest and arms. When he caught her eyes on him, his lips turned up briefly before his attention switched back to the crew. He seemed focused on the upcoming conference. She settled more comfortably in her seat and waited for everyone to quiet. Only eight people in the room, yet it still took them a while.

She smoothed her hands over the light blue pants she wore. Her palms were sweaty from the anxiety churning in her gut. She had to know what else had been found by the others examining various parts of the ship and systems. The results of her search had been bad enough.

With the discoveries made by those looking at the program introduced to the system, it hadn’t been hard to talk their way out of the Relationship Room. The crew needed every person helping, especially since resource restriction meant they had to keep to the bare minimum number of people necessary to oversee the ship. The vast majority of colonists slept unaware of what had happened. She envied them that in a way. They wouldn’t have to know that their very survival was in question. Her gut churned with worry at the possibilities.

Now, they had come together to learn the extent of the damage discovered in the examinations. She’d inspected the engines and the power usage first. After that, she’d gone over the oxygen scrubbers and the machine supply rooms. She’d been amazed at what she found.

“First step, let’s start with any further information about what the program has done.” Robert looked to the man and woman on his right, Josh and Jenny.

Among other jobs on the bridge, Josh and Jenny took care of communications and navigation. Their eyes were red. She could see the darkened smudges from worry and lack of sleep.

Suz grimaced. She probably looked just as exhausted. She’d been busy and working without more than a short nap since they’d climbed out of the room. The mad work schedule had kept her from talking to Robert and David too much, but catching some sleep in their arms had given her more comfort than hours of conversation.

Josh took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. “The program took out the communications first. It’s been working on our system since almost a week after we left the planet.”

Well, at least that meant Robert would blame himself less.
